How do I get started?

Please review the information on the Upcoming Trips and Container tabs before filling out the application on the Application tab.

Is Guatemala safe?

3

Guatemala is a beautiful, welcoming country with a vibrant tourist economy. Like all places, it does have some element of risk. In Antigua and Lake Atitlán, this is predominantly nonviolent crime. Being alert, respectful of local culture, and following some basic safety protocols are recommended.

Participants are encouraged to do their own research, speak to people who have been there, and do their own risk assessment. Participants are also encouraged to challenge and deconstruct any preconceived notions they may have due to media or other influences.

Additional, thoughtful conversation around this topic is welcomed.

Accommodations, most meals, group activities, ground transportation to/from the airport, and ground transportation for group activities, speakers fees for learning from local leaders, the sponsorship of an entire sterilization clinic funded by this trip, and a supply of Nexgard to give to street dogs in need.

Not included: flights, optional activities during free time, some meals (intentionally designed to provide autonomy and prevent group-fatigue), required travel and medical insurance, incidentals, shopping, any dog you want to rescue/take home etc.

What is included?

Will we be actively rescuing any dogs off the street?

5

This is not the goal or intention of the trip. If an individual or the group collectively decides to pursue an active rescue situation, this will require group consensus and/or independent operation by those interested.

Kat is able to connect anyone interested in taking on a rescue project to the relevant resources to rehab, board, and export a dog. Please be mindful that this is gritty, expensive, and requires significant dedication.

What we can offer dogs that we encounter includes food, water, and Nexgard which are budgeted for in the trip costs. Arrangements for vaccinations and sterilizations are fairly easy to make but would require independent sponsorship.

In short—it’s not planned but is also not unlikely to happen. It’s up to you how far you want to take it. Please do some self reflection on this prior to the trip.
